A skin condition that is often confused with warts (learn how to get rid of warts here) is acrochorda – or to give them their more common name, skin tags.

In this post, I’ll be talking about methods you can use to get rid of them, however I’ve deliberately kept it brief because you can find a plethora of information about this skin condition over at the official How To Get Rid of Skin Tags website.

Skin tags are small benign growths that are thought to be caused by friction either by clothes against skin or skin on skin.

They are most commonly found under the armpits (where the skin rubs against the arm or a bra), around the groinal area (where the legs rub together or they rub against tight underwear) and on the neck (where stiff collars rub against the skin). They are also quite prevalent on the eyelids.

One of the simplest and most effective ways of getting rid of skin tags is to tie them off.

This simply involves tying a small piece of fishing line or cotton tightly around the skin tag and waiting a few days. Because the blood circulation to the skin tag will be stopped, it will turn black and fall off. This method is also good because it doesn’t hurt very much.

Another method that can be used to get rid of small skin tags is by cutting them off with a pair of scissors or nail clippers (make sure you sterilize it first). Although it’s quicker than the tying-off method, be prepared for pain and blood! There is also the risk of the open wound getting infected.

There are a number of skin tag removing lotions available at pharmacies and online, but in my experience they aren’t very effective (although I can’t attest to have tried every single one of them!)

Finally, you can have your doctor cut, freeze or burn them off however this may be expensive depending on your insurance and region (this is because skin tags aren’t life threatening and only need be removed for aesthetic reasons).

What you are about to read will teach you how you can rid of warts quickly and easily from the comfort of your home using a little-known method that (in my experience) has worked every time it has been used. It has worked for me, my family and my friends.

This isn’t some ‘quack’ technique of an alternative or homoeopathic wart treatment – it has undergone successful clinical trials, however it is yet to become part of mainstream medicine.

And it doesn’t involve buying any expensive medicines or ebooks – in fact, you probably already have everything you need at home.

What Are Warts?

A wart is a viral infection caused by the Human Papillomavirus(HPV). The virus usually enters the body through broken skin (cuts, grazes etc.) and causes a rough, round and raised area not dissimilar to a solid blister. There are a number of different types of warts that are identified by their shape and location on the body:

• Common warts are cauliflower-shaped and often occur on the hand and feet.
• Verrucas or plantar warts are found on the soles of the feet and grow inwards, causing pain and discomfort when waking.
• Flat warts are found on the arms and face.
• Genital warts occur on and around the genitalia.

Although a wart is (in 99% of cases) harmless, it can be be unsightly and cause slight discomfort. For this reason, the medical profession doesn’t put a high priority on treating warts, although help is available from your doctor. In some cases, having warts can lead to a lower self-esteem and can make people self-conscious about their body. For me, having warts on my fingers caused me to keep my hands in my pockets or wear gloves to attempt to conceal my affliction. Everyone is vulnerable to warts and verrucas, however they are more prevalent in children, teenagers, young adults and people with weak immune systems.

An Awesome Wart Remedy Using Duct Tape

I have used the following technique for getting rid of my own warts, so I am more than happy to recommend it to others.

It also helped get rid of my daughter’s verrucas and has been used by a few friends of mine for getting rid of their warts.

It is called Duct Tape Occlusion Therapy (or DTOT, for short) and all you need to try it for yourself is a roll of duct tape and a nail file. For me and my daughter, our warts/verrucas had vanished within just one month after starting treatment. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Get a roll of duct tape

STEP 1: Get a roll of duct tape

2. Place a piece of duct tape over the wart

STEP 2: Place a piece of duct tape of the wart. Ensure it is firmly-placed and secure so that it won’t fall off.

3. Wait six and a half days

STEP 3: Wait six and a half days. Keep your wart covered by the duct tape and if it falls off, replace it it as quickly as possible with a new piece.

4. Remove tape and debride the lesion with a nail file

STEP 4: After six and a half days, remove the duct tape and gently debride the wart with a nail file, emery board or pumice stone.

5. Wait 12 hours, then reapply the duct tape

STEP 5: Keep the duct tape removed for 12 hours, then apply a new piece over the wart. During this 12 hour break, it is probably a good idea to give your skin a good wash on the area where the duct tape has been situated.

You should continue with this weekly process for up to two months or until the wart or verruca has gone.

If, after two months, there has been no visible improvement you should try one of the alternative treatments described below.

The results from clinical trials using DTOT have been varied and more tests are needed before this wart treatment can be recommended by doctors. A study by Focht III et al. found that DTOT effectively got rid of warts in 85% of their test subjects.

Other Wart Treatments

In the rare cases where DTOT does not work, there are other treatments for getting rid of warts.

Using salicylic acid is perhaps one of the most popular methods of wart removal and is available in creams, gels and even medicated plasters. They can be bought over the counter at a your local pharmacy or by prescription from your doctor. It works by destroying the infected skin cells – and it can also destroy skin cells that aren’t infected, so be very careful when using it. ALWAYS READ THE LABEL.

Another option that your doctor may offer is cryotherapy. This technique kills the infected skin cells by freezing them with liquid nitrogen.

Finally, in rare cases, a wart can be removed using surgery. However, this treatment is not recommended for getting rid of warts by most doctors.

It can take up to 2 years (and sometimes even longer) for your body’s natural defenses to get rid of warts.

Today, I’m going to share with you an effective method of getting rid of warts within a couple of months that you can perform at home but before I do, I think it is worth mentioning the faster wart removal methods that can be performed by your medical practitioner.

Your doctor can get rid of warts quickly by killing the HPV virus that causes them. The methods they have at their disposal are:

• Salicylic Acid – to burn the HPV virus
• Cryotherapy – to freeze the HPV virus
• Surgery – to cut away the wart and the HPV infected skin cells

Salicylic acid is also available to buy online.

The method I’d like to discuss with you today is called Duct Tape Occlusion Therapy (or DTOT) and all you need for it is a roll of duct tape. You can find more information about getting rid of warts with DTOT, including some handy diagrams of the procedure here.

The procedure is simple:

1. Stick a piece of duct tape over the wart, covering it completely.
2. Leave the duct tape in place for six and a half days (if it comes loose, replace it with a new piece ASAP).
3. After six and a half days, remove the duct tape and file the dead skin off of the top of the wart.
4. Leave the duct tape off of the wart for 12 hours (or overnight), then apply a new piece.
5. Repeat steps 1-4 for two months or until the wart has gone completely.

This may seem like a bit of a wacky wart treatment but it has proved successful to many people and this study resulted in an 85% success rate.

Over the years I tried many home remedies to try and get rid of the warts on my fingers, each with varying degrees of success, so I have a good idea of what works and what doesn’t. For this article, I’ve teamed up with a good pal of mine who suffered from a cluster of warts on his neck a few years ago and we’ve put our heads together to come up with our top 5 natural home wart removal remedies.

So, now you know what warts are and the mainstream treatments that are available, it’s time to take a look at our top 5 alternative wart removal home remedies:

In fifth place, we have the potato method. Cut up a potato and rub the white part of it over the wart. Then, bury the potato in the garden (or somewhere that it won’t be disturbed) and as it rots, your wart will disappear.

In fourth place is the garlic method. Simply dice some garlic and rub it on the wart. Repeat daily.

In third place is the dandelion method. Snap the stalk of a dandelion and rub the sap over the wart in a circular motion. Repeat 2 or 3 times each day.

In second place is the aspirin method. Dissolve an aspirin tablet in a drop of water and mash with a teaspoon to create a paste. Dab the paste over the wart and fix in place with a band-aid or plaster.

In first place is the castor oil method. In our experience, this method has been the most successful. Simply rub castor oil over the wart and cover it with a band-aid / plaster. Repeat this process two or three times a day until the wart is gone.

I want to share with you a video I found on YouTube. It contains a great round-up of the techniques recommended to get rid of warts by the medical profession.

Over-the-counter medications containing salicylic acid is the most common wart-removal. This destroys the skin cells infected with the HPV virus that causes warts.

If this fails, warts can be frozen off by your doctor, which is a little painful but usually works faster and is more effective than by using salicylic acid.

WHAT ARE WARTS?
Warts are small rough non-cancerous lumps on the skin that often appear on the hands, fingers, feet and toes (warts on the sole ofthe feet are called verrucas) – although other areas, such as the genitals, can also be affected. They are caused by an infection of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which results in the over-production of keratin by skin cells.

WHO GETS WARTS?
Warts are more prevalent in children and adolescents than adults and it is estimated around 5% of young people suffer from them.

SYMPTOMS
Warts are usually shaped like an irregular circle and are usually not painful although it is not uncommon for them to itch and sometimes bleed. Warts are also highly contagious, so sufferers should try to be vigilant to prevent the spread of the virus.

TREATMENTS
Most warts will clear up on their own without treatment, although it can take years for them to disappear – around 75% of warts will disappear within 2 years without treatment.

There are also a number of treatments available although none of them are 100% effective –  your doctor will be able to advise your best course. Some of the treatments include:

• Surgery – to cut away off the wart
• Chemicals – to kill the infected skin cells
• Cryotherapy – To freeze and destroy the infected skin cells
• Salicylic Acid – To burn and destroy the infected skin cells

Creams containing Salicylic Acid are available over the counter at most pharmacists although it is recommended you visit your doctor first to obtain expert advice.

And my answer is always the same: warts are very, very contagious.

Warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is very contagious to the touch. It is also possible to pass the infection indirectly via a towel, flannel or similar object. The virus is also more likely to infect skin that is wet.

So if you suffer from warts, it is important to minimize contact between the infected area and others as best you can.
